REDAG which is the abbreviation for Responsible Drinking and Gambling was a concept that came after the April 2008 Liquor Conference.
At the liquor conference SAB (South African Breweries), Vukani Slots and Meropa who were the main sponsors of the conference promised
additional sponsorship to assist in the promotion of responsible drinking and gambling through sport.
REDAG was then formed as a section 21 company that would receive all sponsorship money to be used towards the responsible drinking and
gambling campaign. The idea was to use sport as a means to communicate the messages of responsible gambling and drinking with soccer being
the first sport of choice with other sporting codes to be incorporated at a later stage.
SAB contributed R50 000.00 while V-Slots donated R20 000.00. REDAG reports to the department and has already hosted the pilot tournament,
which saw teams from Capricorn and Mopani challenging each other for the ultimate prize. Participants in the tournament had to meet the condition
of being liquor license holders and own a club.
The pilot tournament had only two districts taking part in the challenge, which were Mopani and Capricorn. Each district consisted of eight teams.
The age limit for soccer club players is 30. REDAG will also be responsible for raising funds to continue the awareness campaign. The promotion of
awareness at the tournament took place through the distribution of brochures. The finals for the tournament took place on 29 March 2009 whereby the
champion and the runner up were two teams from Capricorn.
The board members for REDAG are; Tirhani Joseph Maluleke (chairperson), Kundani Simon Mbedzi (deputy chairperson), Esther Makgadi Mabiletsa (secretary),
Martha Mmatlala Mabeba (treasurer), Mosotho Michael Mahlo, Dessia Mpho Tladi, Mukondeleli John Mudau, Nare Peter Mathekga, Tshehla Nkopane, Mthunzi Shakes Dlamini,
Victor Nkhangweleni Ravhuanzwo and Patrick Ngoako Moyana.
